Challenging, interesting, open: George Street United Church now has a very successful history of inviting leading theologians to our sanctuary to share their various visions. To have been challenged by Spong, Borg, Lewis, Raza, Vosper, DiNovo, Cohen, Schmidt, Loney and many others allowed us to grow. We have committed to nurturing the growth of Peterborough’s multi-faith world, and our church remains open to people of all faiths. As Raheel Raza reminded us on her visit –“We all need to be embraced, not tolerated” .

March 2007
Marcus Borg lectures
An outstanding day of lectures and questions and answers on Saturday, plus a splendid Sunday Public worship service led by Borg.

November 2006
Challenging Faith Traditions
Speakers Raheel Raza, Ted Schmidt and Rabbi Jordan Cohen offered a wonderful window of understanding in a series of day-long lectures and a Q-and-A session.

September 2006
Our church hosted a Bay of Quinte Conference event called “Mission, Outreach and Advocacy”. It aimed at looking at, discussing and implementing ways in which we as a conference can work on mission and outreach projects. Approximately 75 people attended with five from George Street United.

November 2005
A Day of Talk and Questions was provided by three outstanding United Church theologians. Gretta Vosper and Cheri diNovo joined our own Karen Ptolemy-Stam, offering us, individually and collectively, refreshing insights on how our precious faith can be understood and entered into in the new millennium.

November 2004
Bishop John Spong was responsible for encouraging the Theological Studies Group to become a full time entity. Over 600 participated with the Bishop enjoying his Saturday lectures and his Sunday sermon at the regular public service. A huge breath of fresh air was let loose on this weekend allowing many folks to think about their faith in new ways – guilt free!
