Faith & Theology

George Street United is well known for its guest speakers, workshops and theological studies. To understand what we're trying to be, we will borrow some quotes from Dr. Marcus Borg from his last visit. He took us on an incredible journey to discover Jesus. Borg argues that how we see Jesus affects how we see Christianity, and reveals a new perspective that can overcome the differences between the literalists and the progressives, a path that emphasizes "the way" of Jesus, the original name of the Jesus movement.

He introduced us to a Jesus we'd never really met before, a religious revolutionary who brought transformation, not doctrine. Jesus remains the decisive revelation of God, but we now see him as both a reality and a role model, centred in God, focused on both personal and political transformation, emphasizing practices rather than beliefs, and exemplifying a faith characterized by deep commitment and gentle certitude.

You are always welcome to join our exploration of faith.

Quotes

"It has meant a safe haven, a place to find a listening ear, and a place to find forgiveness and hope. It has also meant a strong challenge to orthodoxy and the status quo. This is a church that dares us to live our lives as the radical Christ did. It's not always comfortable. Transformation never is. I live for those moments of clarity and soaring joy."
